Don Arcangelo is a 500 acre estate on the east coast of Sicily between Catania and Taormina in a lush citrus valley sweeping gradually down to the sea. There are not one but two villas, stately buildings blending into a harmonious complex of rural architecture with enchanting gardens and terraces bordered with Mediterranean bushes and copious vases bursting with lemon trees and young olives. Altogether, Don Arcangelo has all the aura of the Sicilian landscape of "The Leopard" of Giuseppe di Lampedusa. Indeed, the Paterno Castello di San Giuliano family is a thousand years old and has much in common with the princely clan brought to the screen by Luchino Visconti and Burt Lancaster. The grandfather of the present owner was Italian Foreign Minister at the turn of the century and they used to own the famous Palazzo San Giuliano in Catania.
Both villas are exquisitely furnished and are typically Sicilian with open airy spaces, a legacy of the Moorish era, with views over the villa grounds and citrus groves towards the sea, with Mount Etna dramatically dominating the horizon. The large swimming pool is set enchantingly among the formal gardens and enjoys the same view.
The two villas, which have eight double bedrooms in all, are rented together to ensure absolute privacy and exclusivity for our guests.
A classic Sicilian archway with fountain leads us into the estate.
From the archway you enter the first villa which consists of the following: A large chef's kitchen leads to a dining hall which opens into a large reception hall with fireplace which in turn opens into a large study with fireplace Ð the reception hall and study creating a large airy space with several arches.
Upstairs are a large deluxe master bedroom with a terrace and marble bath, two more beautiful double bedrooms, a smaller double bedroom, an intimate reading room and two additional stylish baths (one with shower only).
Across the gardens you enter the second villa. This is a sumptuous and exquisitely decorated villa. It consists of one floor; an elegant drawing room leads to a wide hall along which are four double bedrooms, all with magnificent en suite full baths. There are lovely large windows throughout and the villa is air-conditioned. The kitchen is near the drawing room as you enter the villa.
From Don Arcangelo the beautiful eastern half of Sicily can be explored in depth; Siracusa, Noto and Ragusa are places of interest; we vote Siracusa one of the loveliest cities in the world. The famous resort of Taormina is a 20 minute drive north and Etna is at your doorstep. Beaches are only a 3 minute drive away. Local excursions, boat trips, fishing, water skiing and sailing can be arranged at extra cost. In the summer there is music and theatre at the Greek theatres of Taormina and Siracusa. Club Picciolo, an 18 hole golf course whose green stretches out in magnificent contrast to the black Mt. Etna lava, is 30 minutes away. The airport of Catania is only half an hour away.
Included in the price are a housekeeper, a butler and a cook. With notice, a week long cooking course may be arranged for your own group. During the cooking course mornings are spent sightseeing and afternoons cooking.
