This is not so much a villa as a stately home, set in a Mediterranean
garden and separated by sand dunes from its own extensive private beach,
quite simply the most extraordinary beach residence in Tuscany. The list of personalities
who have rented Il Tirreno is impressive, from famous pop
stars to the owners of leading French fashion houses while British royalty are
often a guest here.
Behind the house is the estate, a thousand acres of fields
where horses graze or wide-horned white Tuscan cattle roam or sunflowers
turn their heads towards the sun, bordered by allees of maritime pines. It is
also a hunting and wild life reserve in woods carpeted with wild cyclamens,
home to wild deer who wander out in the evening and guests are requested
to drive slowly to preserve the families of pheasants strolling across the road
or hare streaking through the fields.
The house is very large, even by Dolphin
standards, the reception rooms and loggias bristling with antlers and boars'
heads as Il Tirreno was originally conceived as a hunting lodge and the owners
- master vintners in Florence since the 1300's and makers of some of Italy's
most famous wines - are still huntin' and shootin' enthusiasts. DIP is happy
to organize wine tastings of these and other well-known wines in the area.
The beach with its thatched beach hut and full time beach attendant is fifty
yards away from the house, so secluded that the nearest striped umbrella is
far away shimmering on the horizon. Behind the house is a private tennis
court which guests may use from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 10 minutes away by car
or a 20 minute walk along the beach is a luxury hotel where guests may
indulge in thalassotherapy in warm sea-water pools, as well as sauna, Turkish
baths, massage and beauty treatments. At a quarter of an hour's drive is the
best fish restaurant in Italy, Il Gambero Rosso. Grand as it is, the Villa Tirreno
is cozy and intimate, very comfortable and luxurious, ideal for eight persons.

This floor consists of a grand foyer with an elegant winding
staircase leading to the upstairs level, two enormous comfortable drawing
rooms (one opens onto a veranda facing the sea), a formal dining room, a glass terracotta loggia off of the dining room for
outdoor dining, a twin bedroom suitable for children with bathroom and a powder room. The kitchen is on this floor. There are
several outdoor terraces on this level.

Upstairs there are four spacious and sunny twin bedrooms, each with its own color scheme and all beautifully appointed, and four remodeled bathrooms in excellent condition and taste.
