La Meridiana is a splendid country house, three minutes from the village of
Impruneta, the terracotta manufacturing centre of Tuscany and only fourteen
kilometres from Florence. By Tuscan standards, but only by Tuscan ones, it
is relatively new, built in 1830 by Giuseppe Poggi, later to become famous
as the architect of Florence when, in 1860, the city was briefly capital of
Italy. The villa has magnificent proportions, a serene and stately facade,
seven sets of French windows opening onto the long terrace overlooking the
gardens. These were designed by the famous Italian landscape gardener
Porcinai. The house was built by an ancestor of the present owners, a noble
family famous in Florence since Renaissance times and in the lofty interiors
the word baronial first comes to mind, especially the huge fireplaces, the
old masters and the ornate chandeliers. There is a beautiful swimming pool
of the kind that seems to end flush with the horizon with a very Tuscan view
of olive groves and rows of cypress trees.
Ground Floor -
There is a music room with a piano, a summer sitting room with frescoed
walls, a sitting room with a large fireplace, a small living room with
satellite TV and hi-fi, a red lacquered dining room, a kitchen and a
pantry.
First Floor -
There are six double bedrooms and five bathrooms, four with tub and one
shower with steam, a green "hunting study" with balcony, TV, stereo
and fax, and another small study with an internet connection.
On the top floor there are four more bedrooms for children and two bathrooms
but these are not normally included as they are very hot in summer.
The pool is eighteen metres long and there is a fitness room and steam bath
as well.
Two live-in staff are included in the rent. If guests require a cook, a
laundry maid or any other staff member, this is extra.
