This is one of those houses that feel as though you had always lived there, comfortable and furnished like an English country house with chintz covered wing chairs and blue and white plates lining the walls from the Compagnie des Indes. French windows open onto the gardens and the views from its secluded hill-top take the breath away. On the proverbial clear day you can see not only the island of Elba, but Capraia and Gorgona and the island of Monte Cristo, while on the horizon is the outline of Corsica and the tip of Sardinia.
The house belongs to one of the most historic and aristocratic Italian families, mentioned in Dante's Inferno, who for thirteen generations have been Lords of the Manor of Castagneto Carducci and who used to own the whole of the coastline as far as the eye can see. Although only twenty minutes from a private beach, to which guests have access, most seem to prefer to languish by the pool with its panoramic views. In a discreet enclave behind tall gates, the villa, surrounded by gardens, was originally a sixteenth century farmhouse.

On the ground floor are three large and comfortable sitting rooms, a very large dining room with several round tables suitable for entertaining, a twin-bedded room with an adjoining single bedroom ideal for a nanny and children. There is a kitchen and laundry room and a loggia leading onto the gardens for al fresco dining. A powder room is on this floor.
Upstairs are four exquisitely decorated twin-bedded rooms all with en suite bathrooms and a charming "torretta" or tower room with its own bath.

Included in the rent are a gardener who looks after the pool and grounds and a maid who comes in six days a week for four hours each day. A cook is available at guests' expense who can also shop for the family.
