There are houses that at first sight take your breath away and the Villa La Rivella is one. Designed by Palladio and executed by his favourite pupil Scamozzi in 1588, the villa rises out of the flat Venetian countryside alone against the horizon to achieve the same initial shock effect as the Taj Mahal. Although in no other way alike, the Villa La Rivella has the same sublime perfection of proportion and harmony of space which is typical of Palladio at his best. The villa was conceived, not as the monument to a beloved wife, however, but as a working farm which it still is to this day, set in an estate of some hundred acres; this is no museum but a going concern run by the owners, a very old and aristocratic Venetian family. It should come as no surprise that royalty has often been a guest in these splendidly appointed and frescoed reception rooms. The parterre in front of the villa is typically Italian, a maze of midget box hedges set in geometric patterns, while the rose gardens are legendary in horticultural circles and - with its secret allees, sylvan statuary, apple orchards and rare sixteenth century carp pond - the Villa La Rivella is included in garden tours of Italy. Guests can wander forever in these gardens, choosing favorite corners from which to enjoy the view of the distant hills or sip the local white wines on one of the terraces or simply relax by the pool. The villa is 50 minutes from Venice and is perfectly situated to visit Verona, Vicenza, Padua, Ferrara and the other Palladian villas in the area.
The palace is on three levels, and accommodates 8 Š10 guests. The main floor is mostly frescoed by Bernardino India. There are a large comfortable drawing room, two elegant sitting rooms, a library, a dining room and a colonnaded porch. On the second floor are two master bedrooms, both with their own baths, two single bedrooms sharing a bath, and another single bedroom with its private bed - sitting room and bath. The ground floor consists of an entrance hall, the kitchen, linen room, servantÕs quarters, and another master bedroom with its own bath. There is a lift to all floors.
Included are the staff consisting of three maids and a cook. The staff work eight hours a day with an interval for rest in between, six days a week with Sundays off. A guardian takes care of the property.
