About ten years ago cosmopolitan Americans who had already "done" Chiantishire decided that Umbria was the place to be. People like Ted Turner started buying houses here and the hills around Todi have become the favourite haunt of international travellers in the know. The landscape of Umbria has nothing to envy its Tuscan neighbour with its own share of cypresses and olive groves and the same views over old stone farmhouses and hilltop villages. It is also less crowded in summer, an undiscovered delight of a region where nothing is so famous as to have become almost a cliché.

| Todi |
Todi looks down over the Tiber valley from its splendid hilltop position. According to legend, the gods had a hand in creating Todi; an eagle swept over the plains and snatched the blueprints for the city and dropped them at the top of a hill. Todi was first an ancient Etruscan (the Etruscans were never able to resist a hilltop village) and then Roman settlement and has an uncorrupted medieval air. From one of Umbria's most beautiful squares, the piazza del Popolo, and the magnificent Duomo flanking it - tiny streets wander higgledy-piggledy throughout the town. Todi has become a very popular place for sophisticated British and Americans expats and travelers and there are plenty of fine small shops with antiques, clothing and local goods as well as restaurants.
