No wonder the Villa Tasca and its gardens were the inspiration for Wagner's Parsifal. The scale and opulence of this splendid villa are definitely Wagnerian. Originally built in 1559, Villa Tasca has evolved into its present palatial magnificence over the centuries until it has become a living museum of Sicilian history resplendent with frescoes and valuable antiques. Set in a park with lush vegetation interspersed with marble statues, exotic tropical flora and an orchid greenhouse, there is also a swimming pool which was once a lake with swans. The villa belongs to the well-known Sicilian noble family Tasca d'Almerita who produce the Regaleali wines famous all over the world. Visits to the family vineyards, among the largest and most important in Sicily, can be arranged.
Outside, an important sweeping stone staircase leads up to the piano nobile of the Villa where a sequence of beautifully furnished drawing rooms stretch across the interiors behind the villa's facade. Although everything seems very grand, this is a very lived in home, full of family oddities - like the stuffed canary in a cage, once the beloved pet of a former family matriarch - and old family photographs. Everything that should be, like the plumbing and the beautifully re-furbished bathrooms are modern, but in every other respect Villa Tasca has remained as it was at the turn of the century when the horse-drawn carriages of the leading families of Palermo would come at a spanking pace up the long drive to the entrance of the villa after a day at the nearby beach of Mondello.
Immediately upon ascending the staircase and entering the villa we step into the main drawing room, an enormous frescoed space with priceless antiques. In addition to the other drawing rooms a huge formal dining room where foreign heads of state have dined is on this level as well as two large double bedrooms-one absolutely enormous with two double beds and a large fully equipped bath. The second large bedroom also has a large en suite full bath.
On the ground floor a classic billiards table in its own games room idly awaits players. The remaining two over sized bedrooms are on this level - enormous twin bedrooms with en suite baths - and a small study.
An annex of the villa is available at extra cost. It consists of a living room, a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, two bathrooms and a kitchen.
Guests are invited to use the private beach club, Circolo della Vela ( Sailing Club) at Mondello beach. It is a 15 kilometer drive. Sailing boats are free but food and drinks will be charged. Mondello beach was the beach for the nobility of Palermo at the turn of the century.
